What Is a Steamer in Coffee Lingo?

A steamer is a popular drink you can order at any coffee shop. The drink contains coffee with steamed or frothed milk. The steamer usually has a dollop of foam floating at the top of the cup. Does this Spark an idea?

    • Steamers are made with milk, which is steamed using a milk frother. The milk frother turns regular milk into a thick, creamy foam. The milk can be cold or warm before pouring it into the frother. The frother makes the milk more like a cream, which many people prefer.

    • Frothed milk is used in many coffee drinks including cappuccino, latte, hot chocolate and regular coffee. If you order a regular coffee, you can request the barista make it a steamer and add frothed milk.

    • When you order a steamer at a coffee shop, you usually have the option to add a flavor. Most coffee shops have at least a dozen tall bottles of flavored syrup for coffee available. The flavors available often include vanilla, hazelnut, cinnamon, cherry, chocolate, Irish cream, chai tea and mint.
