Vent Free Gas Fireplaces & Safety

Vent free gas fireplaces are an alternative to the traditional fireplaces that require venting. Concerns remain, however, about the safety of vent free fireplaces. These concerns include oxygen depletion, carbon monoxide poisoning and moisture buildup. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Oxygen Sensor

    • To improve safety, manufacturers of vent free gas fireplaces adopted a safety technology in the early 1980s. This technology is called an Oxygen Detection Safety-pilot, or ODS. ODS can detect low levels of oxygen and will automatically shut off the flame and the pilot. The vent free fireplace will not be operational until the area is properly ventilated. The technology originated in Europe where it has been used safely for more than a half a century.

    Overall Fireplace Safety

    • The same basic safety rules apply for using a vent free gas fireplace as they do when using a vented fireplace. This includes never allowing children to operate the vent free gas fireplace and the fireplace should never be left unattended.

    Follow Instructions

    • If you purchase a vent free gas fireplace, follow all of the manufacturer's safety instructions and warnings for safe use. Additionally, you should install smoke and gas detectors.
