About Speakers for a Mac Mini
The Mac Mini's built-in speaker doesn't provide the dynamic range most people want with their media experience. You can improve your audio experience by connecting after-market computer speakers to your Mac Mini.

Using a Mini-Headphone Jack
-
A 3.5mm input or mini-headphone jack works with the Mac Mini. You can connect any computer speakers with a 3.5mm input, also known as a a mini-headphone jack, to your Mac Mini. The Mac Mini has a 3.5mm audio output, indicated by the headphone graphic. Manufacturers for such speakers include JBL, Logitech, Klipsch and Griffin.
Using USB Speakers
-
Connect USB speakers to a USB port on the Mac mini. You can connect USB speakers--which don't require an external power source--directly to a USB port on your Mac Mini. Once connected, you can add them to your system by going to the Sound System Preferences panel, choosing the "Output" tab and selecting the speakers you just connected from the list. Manufacturers for USB speakers include Logitch, Altec Lansing and Sony.
-
Using TOSLINK
-
A TOSLINK cable connects two optical ports. More recently manufactured Mac Minis, as of 2010, also have an optical connection option, known as TOSLINK. To set it up, connect an optical cable with a TOSLINK mini-plug adapter from the TOSLINK port on your Mac Mini to the TOSLINK port on your stereo amplifier. This will allow you to use your home stereo system as the speakers for your Mac Mini.
