Vongo offered video on demand for computers and mobile devices.

Vongo from Starz was a video-on-demand service that provided online movie rentals via download. It was a subscription service that required paying a monthly fee in order to use.

  1. History

    • Vongo was announced by Starz at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2006. Subscriptions costs $10 a month and allowed users to download unlimited movies to use across three PCs or portable devices. Any movie downloaded via Vongo was not purchased; if a subscription lapsed or was canceled, the rights to watch the movie were removed.

    Reception

    • Reviews of Vongo were mixed. Cnet's Rick Broida praised the service's video quality and growing selection of titles but added that most of the titles available were "cut-rate." ExtremeTech's Michael Muchmore also praised the picture quality but lamented the lack of a free service. Technology blog Engadget repeatedly criticized the lack of iPod support for the service.

    Legacy

    • Vongo was not well-received by the public and never caught on. By August 2008, no new subscribers to the services were accepted, and it was shutdown completely the following month. Since then, Starz has launched Starz Play, another subscription-based video-on-demand service.
