Tuna Fishing in Cyprus

No permits are required to angle for tuna fish off the Mediterranean coast of Cyprus.

The Republic of Cyprus, an island country in the Mediterranean Sea south of Turkey, is a haven for tourists and deep sea anglers. Commercial fishing has depleted the stock of albacore and bluefin tuna, but as of 2010 they are still popular trophies for recreational fishing.

Considerations

The best angling for tuna is offshore in a fishing vessel. No license is needed for sea angling provided the fishermen are using vertical lines, trolling or spear fishing without diving equipment. There is no limit on the number of tuna a recreational fisherman can take. No tuna fishing is allowed in designated swimming areas.

License

A license for tuna fishing is required for those using a spear and aqualungs, nets, long-lines or traps. A license is required for fishing at night with a spear gun or commercial fishing. The Republic of Cypress Department of Fisheries and Marine Research issues the licenses.

Charters

Charter companies in Cyprus offer tuna fishing tours with a captain certified by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). The captain must adhere to IGFA standards for safety at sea, saltwater fishing rules, tackle regulations and boating etiquette. A typical deep sea charter for tuna goes 60 miles out to sea.
