Requirements to Carry a Weapon as a Security Guard
The training of security guards is becoming increasingly regulated. The reality is that in the post 9/11 world, more and more is being required of security guards. Armed security guards must submit to extensive screening, are required to train extensively in firearm use and are expected to be security professionals.

Background Checks and Qualifications
-
Requirements may vary by state, but armed security officers usually have to undergo a thorough background check that clears them of serious criminal activity and shows them not to have been involved in any criminal activity within the last few years. Armed security guards cannot have a history of mental instability or health concerns that would prevent them from performing their duties. Usually, armed security guards will need to be citizens or legal aliens able to pass a drug test; must have earned a high school diploma or equivalent; and often are required to have a driver's license.
Firearms Training
-
Armed security guards receive more extensive training then unarmed security guards. Guards carrying firearms are required to have eight hours of initial security-guard training, 16 hours of on-the-job training and 47 hours of firearm training. Typically, armed guards learn about situations justifying their use of lethal force, as well as proper use and maintenance of firearms. They are also required to demonstrate proficiency in target shooting. Usually, armed guards are trained to make arrests or detain individuals in certain situations and in assisting police officers. They must also be capable of writing reports.

Requirement Waivers
-
A police officer or individual with certain military training may be exempt from training requirements, depending on the state in which he is seeking a position as an armed guard. For example, the state of New York waives security-guard firearm-training requirements for active-duty police officers. Other states provide similar exemptions.
