LimeWire & the Law
LimeWire, a peer-to-peer program that allows individuals to share files, is legal. However, many of the files shared through LimeWire are copyrighted, and thus cannot be legally shared.
-
Types
-
Only files that are not copyrighted can be shared on LimeWire. Copyrighted material may only be shared with permission. In addition, users may not share pornographic or illegal material.
Significance
-
Because LimeWire does not allow copyrighted material to be shared through its software, the owners of the software work with copyright holders to help track down individuals who share copyrighted material on LimeWire. Additionally, it is important to note that it is illegal to both share and to download from someone sharing copyrighted material.

Considerations
-
While the individual files (such as music and television shows) fall under various copyright laws, overall enforcement of illegal file sharing online falls under the jurisdiction of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998.The act brings the United States up to code with the World Intellectual Property Organization and allows for the international prosecution of copyright violators.
