Welding Job Training

Welders require specialized training.

Welding involves melting, attaching and shaping metal to meet manufacturing specifications. Welders are skilled artisans who work with dangerous equipment. The skill and risk involved requires that welders have specialized training.

  1. Education

    • Welders must possess a high school diploma. Some companies offer on-the-job welding training, but many prospective welders continue to post-secondary education for specialized training. Such training occurs at a technical college, community college or a college that offers welding engineering. The US armed forces also offer welding training for qualified enlistees.

    Welding Training

    • Welders will receive hands-on welding training. They learn how to safely operate equipment and attach metal through a variety of welding technologies and styles. Advanced welding courses teach mathematics, metallurgy, and reading blueprints and welding symbols. Operators of robotic welders learn programming to operate machinery.

    Certification and Diplomas

    • Certification or diploma programs allow welders to show employers their skills. The American Welding Society certifies welders and welding inspectors in industrial welding. Welding engineers can also receive a bachelor's degree at schools that offer welding engineering courses. To operate welding robots, a welder usually needs a bachelor's degree.
