A wireman or electrician installs and repairs electrical wiring. A wireman works in a variety of settings, both residential and commercial. Most wiremen learn their trade through apprenticeship programs.

All apprenticeship programs require a high school diploma or a GED to enroll. Apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with classroom studies, and students are paid a percentage of the wage a journeyman electrician would make, according to their skills and time in the program. Most apprenticeship courses last four years. Some apprentices get ahead by taking classes before joining the program. Many vocational and technical colleges offer electrician training. Wiremen continue their education throughout their careers to remain current on electrical codes and new technologies. Most states require electricians to be licensed and many require special licenses for electrical contractors.

Wiremen repair and replace wiring and electrical systems in houses and factories. They prepare the grounding system and connect wiring to the structure. They install wiring, security and fire-protection systems. Wiremen install lighting fixtures and troubleshoot electrical systems. They must have knowledge of local, state and federal electrical codes and the ability to understand drawings and specifications. Wiremen read a variety of meters to check current values and the amount of current being sent or received.

Wiremen may become supervisors, project managers or construction superintendents. They may also go into business for themselves as electrical contractors or inspectors.
