Fire Safety Officer Training

Safety officers train fellow firefighters and the public in fire-safety procedures.

Fire safety officers may play several different roles within a firehouse. In many cases, they are responsible for developing and implementing safety training for fellow officers. Fire safety officers also serve the public, participating in fire-prevention activities and community education.

Importance

The Fire Department Safety Officers Association developed training programs to promote professionalism among paid and volunteer firefighters. The standards were developed by a board of firefighters from across the country and reviewed by their peers.

Course Work

Individuals interested in becoming certified safety officers should contact the FDSOA for the appropriate training materials. Training is designed to be completed at home through a program where you study at your own pace.

Examination

Upon completion of course work, candidates may petition the FDSOA for certification by submitting an examination application. Exams are given five times a year, according to the FDSOA conference schedule. Candidates need a score of 70 percent or higher to pass.
