A mechanical, electrical, plumbing coordinator, or MEP, is a construction manager in charge of coordinating construction on large scale projects. The MEP coordinator is responsible for the coordination of construction personnel to ensure that the project is finished on time and without unnecessary delays.

  1. Educational Requirements

    • There are no formal educational requirements for MEP coordinators, but many employers prefer applicants with a bachelor's degree in construction science as well as work-related experience. Many MEP coordinators are former construction workers with building trades knowledge.

    Job Duties

    • MEP coordinators consult drawings and blueprints as well as consult with engineers, designers and other contractors. They will manage the required permits and submit reports to project managers MEP coordinators will plan supervise and inspect the work of the MEP subcontractors to ensure work is being done according to their time schedules.

    Advancement

    • MEP coordinators with continued education and certification will find opportunities with larger projects, or they may become supervisors or executives. Some will become independent consultants or start their own construction management businesses.

    Potential Income

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wages for salaried construction managers was $79,860 in May 2008. The lowest 10 percent of construction managers earned less than $47,000 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $145,920. The wages of construction managers varies greatly because of the size of projects and their locations as well as their skills and work experience.
