Duties

Mixing stucco requires combining measured amounts of hydrated lime, cement and sand with water to form a paste. The plasterer then applies cement paint to the exterior walls to help the stucco adhere to the surface. Before it dries, he applies the stucco on top of it with a trowel and then creates a decorative pattern that is repeated throughout the project.

Skills

A plasterer must have knowledge of stucco materials and mixing methods. Artistic skills are required to create attractive surfaces. He also must know how to use hand tools.

Training

Many stucco mixers and plasterers learn the trade on the job through assisting professional craftsmen. Some employers offer formal apprenticeship programs. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not always required.
