What Is DUI Probation? thumbnail
Driving while intoxicated can result in probation.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances can result in serious consequences, including probation. Community supervision, in the form of probation, monitors offenders to ensure they do not drink and drive again.

  1. Impact

    • Offenders on DUI probation must attend a Victim Impact Panel so they can better understand the consequences of their actions. Victims speak to groups of probationers about the life-altering effects of driving under the influence.

    Terms

    • DUI probation can last as long as five years. Offenders must pay fines, work community service hours, submit to substance abuse testing as directed, report to a probation officer and are not allowed to possess weapons.

    Violation

    • Probation violation for DUI offenders can have serious ramifications. It can include longer probation terms, and/or enhanced sanctions such as additional treatment, intensive probation or jail for a misdemeanor or felony DUI. As a last resort, the judge might sentence the offender to prison for a felony DUI.
