EEC Teacher Certification

Early Educator Certification requirements vary by state.

Early Educator Certification (EEC) is proof of a verified level of education necessary to teach young children who have not yet entered kindergarten or first grade. Preschool and pre-kindergarten teachers introduce children to reading, writing, the arts and sciences through discovery, play and teaching.

  1. State Requirements

    • Each state has its own requirements for certification, which may include experience and/or education. Education requirements vary from a high school diploma or GED to an associate's degree in child development. Some states require a year or more experience working in child care before becoming eligible for certification.

    Federal Standards

    • The federal standard for EEC certification for Head Start teachers is an associate's degree. All Head Start teachers will be required to have an AA degree by 2011.

    Benefits of Certification

    • Many states and employers require certification for preschool and pre-K teachers. EEC certification can be beneficial in securing and maintaining employment.

    Continuing Education

    • Some certifying agencies require proof of continuing education credits for certification renewal. These requirements may be in effect even if early educator certification is voluntary, rather than required by state legislation.
