Wired Vs. Wireless Internet Gaming

Wired Vs. Wireless Internet Gaming thumbnail
To use a wired or wireless connection to game depends on what game you are playing.

Internet video games come in many forms: casual games played via web browser, graphic intensive multi-player online games on the PC and console games with online cooperative play capabilities. While wireless Internet connections are convenient for their flexibility, they may not always be the best option for gaming.

  1. Casual Games

    • Casual online games that are played via a web browser, like Farmville or YoVille, can be played using either a wired or wireless connection. These games do not require a high rate of data transfer for a smooth gaming experience.

    PC Games

    • Fast-paced online PC games such as World of Warcraft or Team Fortress 2 require a fast data transfer speed to ensure smooth gameplay and should be played via a wired connection. If a wireless connection must be used, use a faster technology such as 802.11n, which has a transfer rate of 100 Mbps, four times as fast as preceding versions.

    Console Games

    • Console games with network capabilities are dependent on a fast data transfer speed for smooth gameplay and should also be played via a wired network connection whenever possible. Wireless connections using the 802.11n standard can be substituted if necessary.
