Adrenal Disease in Dogs

The adrenal glands are found beside the kidneys. Their purpose is to regulate the hormones that control body functions such as heart rate and blood sugar levels. Problems can develop if a dog's body produces too many or not enough of these hormones.

  1. Cushing's Disease

    • Cushing's disease is caused when the adrenal glands produce excess hormones. The disorder is caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland or on the adrenal glands. The symptoms include a rounded belly, hair loss, skin discoloration, high blood pressure and muscle weakness. The disease cannot be cured if it is caused by a pituitary tumor, but it can be controlled through medication. Adrenal gland tumors are treated by removing the tumor.

    Addison's Disease

    • Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones. The symptoms include muscle weakness, a lack of energy, and loss of appetite. These symptoms are not constant but can come and go. Addison's disease can be treated through the use of medication that replaces and regulates the dog's hormone levels.

    Adrenal Gland Tumor

    • Tumors on the adrenal glands can cause the body to overproduce hormones. The symptoms are muscle weakness, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, and weight loss, among others. It causes high blood pressure and a rapid heartbeat. The disorder is treated by surgically removing the adrenal gland.
