Mexican currency is known as the peso.

Mexico's national currency is known as the peso. The peso is widely recognized throughout North and Central America and is easy to trade.

  1. Exchange Rate

    • The Mexican peso usually trades at around 10 pesos per dollar, but it depreciated versus the dollar after the 2008 financial crisis. As of July 2010, the peso was trading at about 12 pesos per dollar.

    Best Rate

    • For the best exchange rate, trade pesos for dollars and vice-versa while in Mexico. Exchange houses (casas de Cambio in Spanish) and banks will exchange money.

    Foreign Currencies

    • Most travelers trade U.S. dollars for pesos, but many exchange houses and banks also use euros, Canadian dollars and currency from neighboring countries, such as the Guatemalan quetzal.

    Outside Mexico

    • You can exchange pesos outside of Mexico, but you will get unfavorable rates. Most airport currency kiosks exchange pesos, and as will many U.S. banks.

    Peso

    • Many countries also call their currencies pesos (which means "weight" in Spanish). So outside of Mexico be sure to refer to Mexican currency as the "Mexican peso" to avoid confusion.
