Vitamins or Minerals That Prevent the Absorption of Seroquel

Vitamins or Minerals That Prevent the Absorption of Seroquel thumbnail
Many pills prevent the absorption of other medications.

Seroquel is approved for treatment of adults with major depressive disorder, acute bipolar disorder, manic episodes, and schizophrenia. Seroquel is often taken in combination with other medications. When taking Seroqeul, it is important to make sure other vitamins and supplements you may be taking do not prevent the absorption of Seroquel.

  1. Vitamins and Minerals

    • No study has shown a vitamin or mineral to decrease the absorption of Seroquel. However fruits with a lot of vitamin C, such as grapefruit, activate the cytochrome P450 system. Therefore, eating these fruits could decrease the amount of Seroquel in your system. It is also important to alert your physician about any supplements you are taking.

Although no known vitamins or minerals block the absorption of Seroquel, there are a couple of notable drug interactions.

    Cimetidine

    • Cimetidine has been shown to reduce the amount of Seroquel absorbed orally. Multiple doses of cimetidine have been shown to decrease Seroquel absorption by 20 percent. This effect is usually not large enough to require dosage adjustment.

    Phenytoin

    • Phenytoin is the classic example of a compound that increases the activity of the cytochrome P450 system. This system is responsible for degrading Seroquel. Therefore taking phenytoin will reduce the amount of Seroquel in your system. Your physician will need to adjust your dosage if you must take these two medications together.
