The Agriculture Industry in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom takes great pride in its famous countryside that attracts millions of visitors from around the world. As of 2010, the United Kingdom had 300,000 farms. Scattered across England, these farms have been in operation for centuries.

  1. Types

    • British farms are either pastoral or arable. Located in the hilly regions in the north and west of England, pastoral farms use grass pastures for livestock. Arable farming includes the farms that grow crops. These farms are in the south and east.

    Systems

    • Throughout England there are a variety of techniques used on the farms. A small number of farms use organic systems--farming based off the farms' own resources. Conventional farming uses technology and chemicals. Integrated farming is most popular and makes conventional farming a steady system.

    Considerations

    • Seventy-five percent of England's surface land is kept up by farmers. During the 1970s and '80s, many rebelled against authority and tore up the countryside, but it was restored in the 1990s.
