Veterinarian Code of Professional Conduct

Like human doctors, animal doctors are bound by a code of ethics that governs their professional conduct. Vets are expected to diagnose and treat disease, relieve suffering and mitigate disabilities wherever possible, all while reducing fear in sick or injured animals.

  1. Client Commitment

    • Once a veterinarian and animal owner have discussed a patient's disease or injury, testing and treatment, and the likely outcome, the vet must continue care as described and not stop caring for an animal, unless an owner requests cessation of treatment.

    Emergencies

    • When faced with an animal emergency, veterinarians must do everything possible to save the animal's life or relieve suffering in whatever ways the owner consents to. If no emergency equipment is available in a vet's facility, he must arrange to have the animal moved to a facility that can provide proper care.

    Continuing Education

    • Veterinarians accept the obligation to pursue continuing education within their animal specialty, whether through ongoing classes or course work offered by their associations. By doing so, vets ensure they can offer the highest level of care at all times.

    Avoiding Appearance of Compromise

    • Veterinarians should avoid the appearance of profit when treating animals. They should not be influenced by any agreements involving their professional societies or associations, and they should conduct themselves ethically with all suppliers of diagnostic equipment and pharmaceuticals.
