Head & Hand Tremors

Hand tremors can interfere with a person's ability to write.

Head and hand tremors are involuntary movements that can interfere with a person's ability to write and eat easily. While not painful, they can be embarrassing or frustrating. They occur in both men and women.

Identification

Head and hand tremors are usually classified as essential tremors. They consist of small, fast shaking motions that occur when a person moves her hands or her head. The tremors usually disappear when her hands and head are at rest.

Causes

The cause of essential tremors of the head and hands is unknown. In about half of cases, the tremors are inherited. They can appear in young adults and the elderly, according to Penn State's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Treatment

Medications are available to help control tremors of the head and hand. These medications include propranolol, primidone and benzodiazepine. Avoiding stimulants like caffeine can help reduce the severity of tremors.
