What is the Difference Between a Wireless Router & a Wireless Modem?

Connecting to the Internet with wireless technology is the norm. Instead of clunky wires getting in your way, you only need a wireless router and modem to connect. So, knowing the difference between these two technologies is key.

Wireless Modem

A modem is a necessary device that connects your computer to the Internet via an Internet Service Provider (ISP). You simply need to plug the modem in and connect it to your computer via an ethernet wire and you can get online. Wireless modems are ones that work without the necessity of wires; for example, a cell phone can become a wireless modem by connecting to your computer and using the wireless signal to browse the Internet.

Wireless Router

A router connects two or more computers to a network, allowing all connected devices to access the Internet via one signal. For example, if you have three computers in your home, they can all connect through one Internet signal via a router. Wireless routers are very popular, as they allow you to connect many devices that are not in the same room (i.e. one upstairs and one downstairs).

Major Differences

The main difference between a wireless modem and a wireless router is that they do two separate things. The wireless modem connects your computer to the Internet, while the wireless router allows many devices to share that same Internet signal. You can use one without using the other, as each device has its own purpose.
