40 GB means 40 gigabytes. A gigabyte is a unit of storage meaning one million bytes, or one thousand megabytes. 40 GB can hold a hundreds, or even thousands of text documents and pictures, and hundreds of audio and video files.

As of July 2010, most hard drives are magnetic drives store that data on a series of spinning magnetic platters. As of July 2010, a 40 GB hard drive would be a very small drive. Most hard drives are in the hundreds of gigabytes, and many have eclipsed the terabyte (or one thousand gigabyte) barrier. There are even Flash drives that can store more than 40 GB. Today, a 40 GB drive is probably only an auxiliary drive to a much larger drive.
