The Conceal & Carry Law in California
The California state government clearly outlines under what circumstances it is permissible to carry a concealed weapon, such as a handgun. The situations that are acceptable are limited and call for a California-issued permit.
-
Legality
-
It is generally considered illegal to carry a concealed weapon in public in California. The only time it is permissible is when you have properly obtained a valid Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) license.
License
-
Because county sheriffs and city police departments are the only people able to issue a CCW license, contact your local law enforcement. The sheriff is able to issue licenses only to residents of the county in his jurisdiction, just as the police department only issues to city residents. California does not consider CCW licenses or permits issued from other states valid in California.

Considerations
-
Even after you have a CCW license, you still need to inform law-enforcement officers that you are carrying a concealed weapon. Licenses are issued at the discretion of the law-enforcement agency. Criteria they consider include the applicant's moral character, his need for the license and any criminal restrictions.
