Law regulates Michingan taxes.

Every year, Michigan's Department of Treasury (MDOT) performs its role of tax overseer for the state. According to MDOT, it collects, invests and disburses all state monies and administers state tax laws.

  1. Types

    • Of the various types of Michigan state taxes, income tax is naturally the most featured. Other Michigan taxes include state business taxes, motor fuel and tobacco taxes, sales and use tax, withholding tax and property tax.

    Audits

    • Those called for a Michigan state tax audit have the right to an informal hearing with a mediator on behalf of MDOT. For this hearing, a person must appeal within 60 days of the official audit notice being issued. If dissatisfied with the conclusion form this informal hearing, a person may appeal to the Michigan state tax tribunal within 35 days of MDOT's decision, or the Court of Claims within 90 days.

    Future

    • A July 2010 Detroit Free Press news report said Rep. Pete Hoekstra believed in making Michigan's business climate more friendly. This ideal included eliminating the state's business tax and reducing or eliminating the personal and non-homestead property taxes.
