According to the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks, pheasant hunting is the most common small game hunted in the state. Located in central South Dakota, the city of Vivian is home to seven public hunting areas for pheasant.

  1. Where to Hunt

    • Pheasant hunting is available at seven public hunting areas within Vivian's Lyman County, including: Brakke Dam, Carpenter, Fate Dam, Kiowa, Lindley, and Neugebauer Public Hunting Areas and the Lyman Co. Corps Land Area.

    Season and Shooting Hours

    • In Vivian, the hunting season for pheasant runs from October 16th through January 2nd, as of the 2010 and 2011 hunting season, with future seasons starting on the third week of October. Pheasants may be hunted from noon to sunset for the first seven days of the season, and from 10 a.m. to noon for the remainder of the season.

    Possession Limits and License Requirements

    • The daily limit for male, or rooster pheasants, is three per hunter, per day, with no more than 15 roosters retained for the season.
