SMTP & POP3 Protocol

SMTP & POP3 Protocol thumbnail
POP3 and SMTP are two protocols used to receive and send email.

Email is used every day for personal and business use. POP3 and SMTP are the most popular email protocols. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and some webmail providers like Yahoo! and Google often give their subscribers POP3 and SMTP access.

  1. POP3

    • Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) is a popular email protocol and is supported by all major desktop email clients. POP3 stores the user's received email until it is accessed and downloaded off of the server.

    SMTP

    • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is often used in conjunction with POP3 servers and is also supported by all major desktop email clients. Unlike POP3, which deals with received mail, SMTP is used to send mail from one server to another.

    Alternative

    • Internet Mail Protocol (IMAP) is an alternative to POP3. IMAP stores email on the server, saving message states as read or unread, until the message is deleted from the server. IMAP's capabilities make it suitable for shared mailboxes.
