Help preparing tax returns is available for free for low income, elderly and military-affiliated citizens.

Tax time is stressful for many people and can present special challenges for low income individuals, senior citizens or members of the military. Organizations exist that provide free assistance with preparing and filing returns for these groups.

  1. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

    • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, VITA, provides free assistance to tax filers whose income is around $49,000 or less. Volunteers receive special training and can help file returns electronically.

    Tax Counseling for the Elderly

    • Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program specifically addresses the needs of those who are age 60 or older. Volunteers receive training on counseling and basic tax return preparation, focusing on specific issues for senior citizens.

    Military Personnel and Their Families

    • The Armed Forces Tax Council (AFTC) coordinates tax return assistance for all branches of the military. In coordination with VITA, tax counseling sites are available wherever American soldiers are, staffed with VITA workers specially trained on issues affecting military men and women such as options for reporting combat pay and requesting special return filing extensions for those serving the country.

    Tax-Aide

    • During tax season, the AARP Tax-Aide program provides free counseling at about 7,000 sites to people age 60 and over in the low-moderate income range.
