The History of Linux
Linux is an operating system designed to manage the operations of a personal computer or other hardware. Linux is distributed under the GNU General Public License, which means that it can be copied and modified by the programming community.

Linux was originally created by Linus Torvalds, a student at the University of Helsinki in Finland. He started writing the operating system in 1991 as a hobby and released the Linux Kernel 1.0 in 1994. The Linux Kernel is the core of the operating system and is built upon by others to create a better operating system.

Since Linus Torvalds released Kernel 1.0 in 1994, it has been modified many times. The current version of the Linux Kernel is 2.6.34, which was released in May 2010.

Soon after Linux was released, several private companies started distributing proprietary versions of Linux. The first of these companies included Red Hat and Caldera in 1994, and Penguin Computing and VA Linux Systems several years later.
