Auto Vs. Motorcycle Oil

Auto Vs. Motorcycle Oil thumbnail
Motorcycle-specific oil is commonly more expensive than auto oil and has a few distinct differences.

Although automobile oil works perfectly in most motorcycles, motorcycle-specific oil has a few key factors which help maintain the performance and longevity of the motorcycle. Auto oil is usually cheaper than motorcycle oil and is mixed in a much less complex process.

  1. Viscosity

    • Even though most motorcycle and auto oils use the same viscosity classifications, motorcycle oil is usually naturally thinner than auto oil. This provides easier lubrication for small, quick-moving internal components in the motorcycle.

    Heat Reduction

    • Motorcycle oil is designed to reduce the extreme heat in motor internals than standard auto oil. Motorcycle engines tend to generate more focused point heat than many auto engines.

    Cost

    • Motorcycle oil is usually much more expensive than standard auto oil, anywhere from 20 to 50 percent more on average. Due to the extended refining of motorcycle oil, it costs more to create. Purchasing motorcycle-specific oil is definitely worth the cost, though, as it will help extend the performance and life of your machine.
