What Is Oil Used for on a Polaris ATV?
Oil, while having multiple uses on all types of motor vehicles, plays an extremely important role in the operation of Polaris ATVs. Oil keeps the motor and transmission running and provides needed lubrication and cooling.
-
Lubrication
-
Oil flows through the internal components of a Polaris ATV's engine and transmission to reduce the amount of friction between metal parts. This, in essence, keeps the internal parts of the ATV from tearing themselves apart.
Cooling
-
Oil provides an internal coolant for the Polaris ATVs' motor and transmission. The constant flow of oil creates a river effect, carrying heat "downstream," which in turn prevents the components from overheating.
-
Weight Distribution
-
The presence of oil within a Polaris ATV's engine and transmission creates the proper weight distribution needed to balance internal components and allow them to cycle as effectively as possible. When a few pounds of liquid oil become sealed within an engine and transmission, and after the internal parts heat up, they become pressurized, much like the effect inside a closed pop can. This pressure calculation comes into account on high-performance engines such as ATV and motorcycle engines that are meant to run harder and faster than typical engines.
Cleaning
-
While the internal components are sealed as effectively as possible, some combustion byproducts are still able to escape. Oil collects and holds these particles until they can be collected and cleaned out by the oil filter.
