Payroll Administrator Certification

Payroll certification indicates an individual's expertise, knowledge and skills in the payroll profession. Certification is obtained through an examination administered by the American Payroll Association (APA). The exam is offered twice each calendar year in the U.S. and Canada and year-round internationally.

  1. Certification Levels

    • The two levels of certification are Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) and Certified Payroll Professional (CPP). FPC demonstrates a baseline of payroll competency and is designed for payroll beginners and service and support professionals with payroll knowledge. CPP is a credential for those with payroll knowledge and experience.

    Examinations

    • The FPC examination has no eligibility requirement. To be eligible for the CPP examination, a combination of experience and payroll education is required. For both levels, APA provides study aids and preparation courses. Study groups and self-study tools are also available.

    Recertification

    • Recertification is required after five years for CPP and after three years for FPC. This may be achieved by accumulating certification credit hours or by successfully retesting.
