Onkyo's TX-DS787 receiver can power a 6.1 home theater

Manufactured and sold in 2003 for around $999 and now discontinued, Onkyo's TX-DS787 is a receiver that can supply a home theater speaker system with 6.1-channel surround sound. When it was manufactured, it was the first THX Select-certified Surround EX receiver.

  1. Features

    • The TX-DS787 supplies 130 watts to each channel. As well as handling 6.1 channels of surround sound and offering a THX Surround EX mode, the TX-DS787 can also handle Dolby ProLogicIIx and DTS 96/24. You can also add Onkyo's DS-A1 iPod dock and then control an iPod using the receiver's remote control.

Surround EX is an audio technology created by THX that adds a channel to a standard 5.1 home cinema speaker system. A regular 5.1 design includes a front speaker for dialogue, left and right front speakers, left and right rear speakers, and a subwoofer. THX Surround EX, also known as Dolby Digital EX, creates another channel at the rear from a 5.1 sound mix. To hear it, you'll need to add another speaker directly behind your seating position. The result is 6.1 surround sound, though it's not deemed to be "true" 6.1 since THX Surround EX creates the sound from the two rear channels.

    Recent upgrades

    • Onkyo has made many receivers since the TX-DS787 was discontinued. In July 2010, Onkyo announced the arrival of its HT-S9300THX, the first 3D-Ready and THX Certified Integrated Home Theater System. This $1,099 product has four 3D-Ready HDMI 1.4a inputs and an optional UP-A1 dock for iPod/iPhone. It adds a further channel to create a 7.1 surround sound effect in a package that includes all seven speakers and a subwoofer. It also includes the same THX Surround EX mode found on the TX-DS787.
