Becoming a certified auto mechanic is a straightforward process.

While the process is voluntary, certification for auto mechanics is the norm in the automotive service industry. Once earning the designation, mechanics must stay current in the field to maintain credentials.

Education

According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, most employers consider training through a vocational school as adequate for entry-level positions. Mechanics who receive their training through a formal high school program may need additional training to become qualified.

Prerequisites

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, two years of experience and a passing score on the exam are the requirements to earn the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) credentials of Master Automobile Technician. The exam covers eight areas of study.

Maintaining Certification

Auto mechanics must renew their certification every five years by retesting in each area. Failure to do so results in a loss of credentials.
