Personal shoppers take the guesswork out of shopping.

Greater spending and more women working outside the home have increased the need for personal shoppers, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics. To secure a job as a personal shopper, you must receive proper training, whether you develop shopping skills on your own or through a training program.

Types

There are several ways to earn personal shopper training. Personal shoppers can gain hands-on experience as a stylist at a big-name department store or give one-on-one consulting in a local boutique. Or they can go through a training program for personal shopping.

A well-trained personal shopper will know how to interact with and dress her clients. She will develop strong customer service skills as well as fashion skills.

Considerations

Some schools, such as the Sterling Style Academy, offer four-week image consultant courses to prepare students to work as personal shoppers. These courses work well for aspiring personal shoppers who do not have hands-on experience.
