The rise of the Internet has had a revolutionary effect on society. One way the Internet has transformed society includes the evolution of communication technology that eliminates the obstacle of distance from the communication process.

Types

Internet communication technology can be categorized into two groups, synchronous communication and asynchronous communication. Synchronous communication, including chat rooms and instant messages, occurs in real time. On the other hand, asynchronous communication, such as e-mails and blogs, allows people to respond to communications at their convenience.

Function

Electronic protocols make Internet communication possible. Two kinds of electronic protocols used for Internet communication include FTP and SSH. FTP, while easier to use, proves to be less secure than SSH, which encrypts your message to provide security.

Digital Diversity

The increased use of Internet communication technology has created a call for greater digital diversity. Digital diversity is a movement encouraging equal access to Internet communication technology for people of different races, abilities and social classes. The type of Internet connection also plays a role in digital diversity, as high-speed connections offer more online opportunities than slower connections.
