Difference Between a Pro & a Pro Duo Memory Stick

Memory sticks are used to hold digital content.

In 2003, Sony and SanDisk released the Memory Stick Pro. According to a press release at the time, the Memory Stick Pro allows real-time recording of high-resolution video and data loss prevention. In 2008, Sony unveiled its Memory Stick Pro Duo, with added benefits.

Uses

According to Sony, memory sticks bring the "convenience of recording different types of digital content, and sharing and exchanging them among the widest possible variety of products." Recordable file types include photos, computer data, music and moving images.

Specifications

The Memory Stick Pro has a transfer speed up to 160 megabits per second, 1GB capacity and minimum write speed of 15Mbps, allowing DVD-quality recordings. Sony sells the Memory Stick Pro Duo in 16GB and 32GB, for even more storage.

Differences

Thinner and smaller than the Memory Stick Pro, the Pro Duo works in devices such as portable hand-held video games, MP3 music players, and cell phones. Sony says it uses multi-stack technology to achieve its smaller design, and an adapter allows compatibility between Pro Duo and Pro products.
