Dictionary.com defines phishing as, "A method of identity theft carried out through the creation of a website that seems to represent a legitimate company." Customers then submit their information and thieves use the information to steal their money and identity.
Problems

Phishing happens when you click a link or download a file from an unknown user. Often there are no warning signs.

Precautions

Only download links from friends, family and colleagues. Do not give out any information to anyone if asked. A bank will never ask for your information over the Internet.
