Volunteer firefighters receive training on how to rescue fire victims.

Volunteer firefighter training is mandatory of all potential volunteer firefighters to ensure that they can successfully perform the required volunteer duties. The training usually takes place over two to four months, according to Education-Portal.

  1. Function

    • Volunteer firefighter training teaches firefighters how to put out fires, handle emergency situations, use different kinds of equipment and work with other firefighters and the public.

    Features

    • Training programs may include tasks such as operating cutting tools, rolling and carrying hoses, climbing ladders, identifying classes of fire, scene size-up, controlling traffic and treating burns and shock. Trainees are also encouraged to participate in personal development and obedience classes.

    Considerations

    • Firefighter training is extremely strenuous and requires physical strength and stamina. Training programs are comprised of physical, mental and health tests, so candidates should prepare to complete these prior to acceptance. Some fire companies may require CPR-certification and the completion of an emergency medical technician (EMT) course.
