Know the difference between a notebook and a netbook.

If you're looking for a new laptop, you may be confused by two similar-sounding categories, netbooks and notebooks. To determine which is right for you, you need to know the difference between the two.

  1. Notebooks

    • Notebook computers, also commonly called laptop computers, take the power of a desktop and make it portable and easy to use. Notebook computers feature 13- to 18-inch screens, full-sized keyboards and may be optimized for office use, media and gaming. Notebook computers range between $500 and $3,000.

    Netbooks

    • The netbook is a compact, lightweight and low-cost portable computer. Designed with casual users in mind, they are built primarily for Internet browsing and light word processing. They offer more portability and a smaller size, but also use smaller screens, less processing power and less flexibility.

    Netbook Advantages

    • Netbooks are small enough to be taken anywhere, and perfect for students and casual users. They offer Internet access and word processing capability anywhere, and usually cost less than $500.

    Netbook Disadvantages

    • Netbooks aren't perfect for everyone, however. The smaller size results in smaller screens with lower resolution, tiny cramped keyboards and significantly less hardware. If your computer needs include heavy processing, high-quality graphics or the ability to play a DVD, netbooks probably aren't for you.
