Etiquette for Twitter & Facebook

Twitter and Facebook are two of the most popular social networking sites on the Internet. Although the sites are different and operate differently, similar rules of etiquette apply to both.

  1. Status Updates

    • Twitter and Facebook status updates allow you to post where you are or what is on your mind. Be respectful and do not clog your friends' news feeds every two minutes. Do not use sarcasm unless you make it clear you're doing so and do not post things that are inside jokes with others. People on Facebook or Twitter may not understand and may take offense.

    Profile Photos

    • Choose a profile picture for Twitter and Facebook that is not offensive and that demonstrates you in a positive light. Many people use these sites for a professional platform, so do not use a picture of you taking a body shot or something that is racist or sexist.

    Information Sharing

    • Do not sound vain or share too much online over Facebook or Twitter. Do not use social networking sites to brag or write a long biography about your life. Keep in mind that your profile talks to many people, not just one person.
