Tractor/trailer drivers must be commercially licensed.

Driver positions are available in numerous fields, ranging from chauffeur to tractor/trailer driver. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) divides these into categories, depending mainly on the type of vehicle used.

  1. Driver/Sales Workers

    • The field loosely identified as "Driver/Sales Workers" by the BLS includes people who travel within established areas to sell, pick up or deliver goods. This position could entail collecting payments, taking orders and recruiting clients. Newspaper and food delivery drivers fall within this category.

Truck Drivers, Light or Delivery Services

    • A vehicle with a gross weight (GVW) of less than 26,000 lbs.---when loaded to capacity--- falls into the "Light Truck or Delivery" category. According to the BLS, driver positions in this group generally do not require a commercial driver's license (CDL). The primary function in this field is to deliver or pick up merchandise. Duties can include inventory control, light lifting, loading and unloading.

    Truck Drivers, Heavy and Tractor/Trailer

    • For a heavy truck or tractor/trailer driving position, the BLS says a CDL is required. This category applies to vehicles with a GVW of at least 26,000 lbs. The job might require transporting and delivering goods, materials or livestock, loading or unloading and dispatch duties.

    Other Motor Vehicle Operators

    • Other categories that fall within BLS "Transportation and Material Moving" occupations include bus or transit drivers, taxi drivers, chauffeurs and ambulance drivers.
