OSHA First Responder Training

OSHA provides guidelines for first responder training.

OSHA does not require first responder training. However, guidelines for first responder training are provided with OSHA's basic elements of first aid training. Training includes assessing the scene and basic triage principles.

  1. Assessing the Scene

    • First responder training includes rapid assessment of the scene. Trainees must be able to quickly determine the cause of injuries and be able to identify any remaining hazards.

    Assessing the Injured

    • Training also includes rapid assessment of the number of people injured. In addition, trainees must be able to quickly determine whether any able people are nearby to assist in first aid.

    Triage

    • Training includes triage methods for assessing the nature and severity of each victim's injuries. Triage includes determining which injuries need to be treated first.
