A building code inspector applies engineering skills to determine if buildings are structurally sound and in compliance with building code specifications. Building code inspectors are also sometimes known as construction and building inspectors.

  1. Requirements

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that building code inspectors are required to have at least a high school diploma or GED.

    Program Types

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employers do seek job candidates who have studied architecture or engineering or have a degree or have taken postsecondary courses in home inspection, building inspection, construction technology, drafting and mathematics. A growing number of building code inspectors have a bachelor's degree.

    Training

    • Training requirements depend on the State and the type of inspector, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most training is conducted on-the-job. Building codes are learned on their own. Many work with an experienced inspector.
