Canon Copier History

The history of the Canon Copier traces back to the development of the Xerox machine and the battle that ensued over the photocopier market. New York patent attorney Charles Carlson invented a process called electrophotography in in 1937. Renamed xerography in 1938, the process was the basis for the electrostatic photocopier known as the Xerox machine.

  1. Market Battle

    • Haloid Xerox introduced the first true office copier, the 914, in 1958. With the great success of the 914, other manufacturers got ready to challenge Xerox market domination and rebrand "the Xerox machine" as "the photocopier."

    Strategy

    • Rivals found that the only way to break down Xerox customer loyalty was to found small copier dealerships offering a local service. Canon was the most successful company to employ this marketing strategy, and by 1985 the company had become the world's leading photocopier company, according to Digipro.co.uk.

    Highlights

    • Canon entered the photocopier market in 1965 with the launch of the Canofax 1000. In 1973 the company introduced the Canon color photocopier, the first electrostatic color photocopier. Due to expense, color photocopiers did not gain a market share until the early 1990s and were initially mainly used by print shops. In 1982 Canon developed the first personal photocopier, with all of the reproduction elements contained in a replaceable cartridge.
