A QC chemist works in a company's quality control department.

A QC chemist, or quality control chemist, helps a company improve the quality of its products. The chemist conducts qualitative and quantitative assessments at QC labs to monitor product quality or processes.

  1. Duties

    • A QC chemist reviews and tests components, raw materials and finished products to ensure that such products and materials meet corporate quality and safety standards. The chemist also analyzes organic and inorganic matter to identify chemical properties, composition and structure, according to O*Net OnLine.

    Aptitude, Tools and Technologies

    • According to O*Net OnLine, a QC chemist must possess a knack for solving problems and the ability to manage time appropriately. Having scientific acumen and control analysis skills also help. A QC chemist often uses benchtop centrifuges, chemistry mixers, spectrometers and graphics or photo imaging software.

    Salary and Knowledge

    • As of 2010, the average annual wages of QC chemists were $46,000, according to the job resources portal Indeed. Employers require that job candidates have bachelor's degrees in chemistry or a related scientific discipline to qualify for a QC chemist position.
