Height for Bird Feeders

Height for Bird Feeders thumbnail
Placing your bird feeder at the appropriate height increases the likelihood that birds will use your feeder regularly.

Placing your bird feeder at the right height ensures your feeder gets plenty of traffic. Though you can place a feeder at nearly any height and attract birds, the National Audubon Society recommends placing feeders at different heights to attract different birds.

  1. Ground

    • Sparrows, towhees and juncos typically eat off the ground. Offer a flat, table-like feeder on the ground to attract these birds.

    Low

    • Finches and cardinals are usually found feeding in low shrubs. To accommodate these birds, place feeders at the height of a mature bush--approximately 3 or 4 feet off the ground.

    High

    • Woodpeckers, chickadees and titmice normally feed high off the ground. Situating feeders 6 to 8 feet above the ground will bring these birds to your yard.
