What Kind of Food Do I Feed a Wild Baby Bird?
Wild baby birds should be fed according to their age and species. This article will focus on what to feed a wild baby perching bird that has opened its eyes and has sprouted feathers. These birds can be fed from the tip of a toothpick or chopstick, depending on size, every hour.

Meat
-
Meat should be the base of the baby bird's diet. Raw kidney, liver or ground beef, meat baby foods or canned pet food are some options. If using hard cat chow, moisten with water and heat the mixture to 160F to destroy any bacteria. Allow mixture to cool before feeding. The mixture should be slightly thicker than oatmeal.
Eggs
-
Scrambled or hardboiled eggs are easy to feed separately. Raw eggs can be mixed into other food. Egg shells should be ground up and added for necessary calcium.
-
Mealworms
-
Mealworms can be found at many pet food stores. The worms will need to be cut up for the baby bird. Because mealworms are too low in calcium, they cannot be the sole source of food for the bird.
Water
-
Do not provide water to a bird until it is walking and perching. Water should only be offered in shallow dishes or lids in the cage. A weight, such as a clean rock, can be placed in the middle to keep the bird from standing in the water or knocking it over.
