Minimum Wage Policies
Federal minimum wage laws are not absolute. There are several provisions that allow for legal wages below the minimum wage. Human resources personnel and employees must monitor these provisions to ensure their company's policies are in accordance with the law.
-
Standard Minimum Wage
-
As of 2010, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Individuals who work a standard 40-hour workweek at this rate take home about $11,100 a year.
Youth Minimum Wage
-
The minimum wage for youths under 20 years of age is $4.25 as of 2010. However, this wage only applies during the first 90 consecutive calendar days of employment.

Minimum Wage Exceptions
-
Several 2010 provisions allow certain workers to earn less than federal minimum wage. These provisions include exceptions for certain physically and mentally impaired workers, workers who receive tips, employees of amusement or recreational establishments, employees of small newspapers, newspaper delivery personnel, farm workers on small farms and other select groups.
