Computer Salvage & Recycling

Blue Ridge Computer Recycling reports that when a computer system is donated for recycling, it is evaluated for reuse by low-income families or as a low-cost second computer. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) figures from 2007 show that 18 percent of computer systems and TVs in waste-disposal systems were shipped for recycling.

  1. Computers

    • According to Blue Ridge Computer Recycling, more than 250 million computers are being used in the U.S. Alongside these working computers are about 300 million damaged computer systems that are not in use and could be recycled or salvaged.

    Materials

    • The EPA describes recycling and salvage of computers and their parts as important because of the valuable materials they contain. One metric ton of recycled circuit boards can contain between 40 and 800 times the amount of gold mined in the U.S.

    Recycling

    • Blue Ridge Computer Recycling explains that when a computer system is donated for recycling and salvage, it is evaluated for working condition. If the system is not in working condition, parts and materials are reused in other computers, and other materials are salvaged.
